Castorino Collection for Righteous Fur

Xiomara’s previous runway foray is a collection made of Castorino fur. Answering a call from the Righteous Fur group, del Carmen fashioned some of-the-moment long vests, aviator hats and glamorous leg-warmers.

The Castorino fur is a soft and glossy fur that comes from the nutria, an invasive species that has destroyed an estimated 100,000 acres of wetlands in the southern United States. The Nutrias eat the marsh grasses and have no natural predators, if they continue unabated – the resulting land loss can cause a complete collapse of the ecosystem.

Members of Louisiana’s Coastwide Nutria Control Program already harvest thousands of nutria a year, often letting their pelts go to waste due to low demand. This is one of the reasons Xiomara sees Castorino as an eco-friendly fur.

Says Discover Magazine: “If you love the feel of fur on your skin, but don’t want to be burdened with guilt, consider the nutria.”
